WHO WE Are
Ellen Min & Amber Sessoms
We met through community work where we witnessed the quiet strength of collective care. In those spaces, healing didn’t require translation, and joy could stretch its limbs again. We’ve led in rooms that required shrinking. We’ve also witnessed what happens when women gather in truth. But it wasn’t just what we witnessed; it was what we lived. We created Kindred Collective because we needed it. (We can edit/revise this).
What We Do
-
We cultivate a liberatory sisterhood of healing, learning, and joy.
-
We envision a world where those shaped by girlhood thrive in the fullness of their being.
When Kindred is successful, we envision a world where those shaped by girlhood, which includes gender-expansive persons, thrive in the fullness of their being: embodied, joyful, and whole. It is a world where healing is not something we do in isolation or shame, but something we return to in community. Where joy is not reserved for moments of escape, but infused into our everyday practices. Where leadership is not performative, extractive, or hierarchical, but relational, rooted, and reflective of who we truly are.
In this future, girls grow up witnessing women who are fully themselves: grounded in their values, aligned with their needs, and unafraid to take up space. Elders are honored as wisdom-keepers. Youth are trusted as truth-tellers. We see a world where no one has to shrink to belong, where our stories are not just heard but held, and where the sacred act of being, without performance, is celebrated as powerful.
This is not a far-off dream. It is the memory we are returning to and the future we are actively building. Kindred becomes a world within the world. A reminder that our liberation isn’t just possible—it’s already in motion.
-
Our collective, Kindred, welcomes all who are aligned with our values, but intentionally centers Black, Brown, and Indigenous women, girls, and gender-expansive persons whose wisdom has too often been dismissed and whose pain has been pathologized rather than held. Drawing on the lived experiences and shared lens that Amber and Ellen bring as women of color, we recognize the unique challenges and strengths that come with navigating the world in these identities.
We are a home for those who are tired of translation. For those who are often the only one in the room. For those who are ready to unlearn performance and remember presence. We honor the lived realities of women and femmes navigating overlapping systems of oppression (racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, ableism) and we create liberatory spaces where healing is communal, learning is embodied, and joy is honored as a birthright.
In addition to serving adult women and femmes, Kindred is committed to supporting youth, particularly middle and high school girls, by planting seeds of self-awareness, intergenerational connection, and collective care early in their journeys. We do not believe leadership is reserved for adulthood. We believe young people are already wise, already whole, and already leading. We create spaces for them to grow without shrinking.
We are building a community for the ones who have been overlooked by dominant systems, but never forgotten by each other. Because in this moment of cultural and political unraveling, we are not waiting for permission to heal—we are building community to thrive.
